Im not a Zac Efron fan, so I was sceptic going into this movie. I was convinced it was going to be the same old, same old movie. Without a good story line, showing Zac off just so teenage girls would squeal at the sight of him. I wasnt really feeling it at all, and this feeling grew stronger when entering the cinema and finding more than 30 teenage girls, scattered all over the room, popcorn in hand and excited to see Efron act.
I found myself a seat, I was with my mom, we go to movies lots and lots of times. So, we wanted to give "17 Again" a shot. The movie started and the girl all squealed during the commercials, making me ready to jump out of my seat and smack them.
The movie starts and we find Efron shooting hoops, what a surprise, didnt we see this before? I have to say that High school musical was fun to watch but it is time to move on. Finally, we see some cheerleaders and Efron jumps in and does a little dance, again, havent we seen this before? The movie was off on a weak start, until we find out why Efron (called Mike in the movie) threw away his scholarship.
His girlfriend is pregnant, even though they make you believe she is breaking up with him. So, we fast forwards a couple of years to find Mike (older version played by Matthew Perry, who ever though he looked like an older Zac Efron?) depressed and burned down. Mike, working a job he hates, has two kids with Scar (his high school girlfriend) who hate his guts. He cant stop complaining about his messed up life and Scarlett asks for a divorce.
Finally, Perry gets a chance to do it all over. Efron steps in and saves the day, as much as I like Perry in friends, I cant really watch an entire movie about him. Even though I wasnt a Efron fan, hes nice to watch (major denial issues).
So, Efron finds himself, tadaaaa, 17 again. He lives in with his former high school friend (and nerd) called Ned. Ned, who finds Efron 17 again, freaks out and starts to attack him. Which is hilarious because he grabs lightsabers and stuff, things I bet those 14 year old girls in front of me had no idea about.
Finally, during the movie Efron shows us some good acting. Really, I was shocked. When he had to act out, Michelle Trachenberg (who plays Maggie, Mikes daughter) came on to him and he didnt like her the entire room was laughing.
At the end, it ends the same as it started. But this time I wasnt really disappointed. I found myself watching Efron with delight. I have to say, he made me a fan. Not because of his looks or the entire hype around him. For showing me that his acting isnt just some lame-ass fake Disney rip-off. I do not mean to insult anyone who was already fan of Efron. I like him.
17 Again, isnt a movie weve seen before, it is very refreshing for a teen movie so go watch it.
